Gaffel Sonnenhopfen
Our Cologne
Pale Ale
Gaffel Sonnenhopfen
Brewed according to the German Purity Law, Gaffel SonnenHopfen naturally contains no additives, but only malt, yeast, water and hops. Immediately after pouring, exceptional fruity notes develop, which come exclusively from the high-quality Citra hops. The Cologne Pale Ale is not filtered and thus retains the many important nutrients from the brewing process.

The naturally cloudy Cologne Pale Ale with Citra hops
The top-fermented naturally cloudy Gaffel SonnenHopfen is brewed with Citra hops from the sunny Yakima Valley. The valley, which is equally famous for fine wine and high-quality natural hops, is located in the south of the U.S. state of Washington. 80 percent of U.S. hops come from this region. The Yakima Valley is the second largest hop-growing region in the world after the Hallertau in Bavaria.
Only Citra hops of one vintage are used for Gaffel SonnenHopfen.

Citra hops from the Yakima Valley
Citra hops are grown on a relatively small area and are therefore only available in limited quantities. However, Gaffel has already secured the harvests for the next few years. Incidentally, only the Citra hops of one vintage are used for Gaffel SonnenHopfen. This guarantees consistent, top-quality hops. After all, soil conditions, sunny days and rainy days influence the properties of a hop just as they do the vine of a wine.
SonnenHopfen from Cologne
When the brewery “In der Gaffel” opened in 1908, word quickly spread in Cologne that the Becker family brewed full-bodied, top-fermented beer. Soon the first innkeepers asked if they could serve this beer from Eigelstein No. 41. Thus the home brewery developed into a medium-sized company. Despite all the changes and modern adaptation processes, one thing has remained the same: the passion for brewing that keeps spurring on new ideas. Following the success of Gaffels Fassbrause, Gaffel SonnenHopfen has now been developed as a beer that is a refreshing alternative to wheat beer.
